Blackwells Espresso Book Machine

Espresso Book Machine - Print Your Own Books

Blackwell's in London are installing an Espresso Book Machine (EBM) which lets you print books on demand in under 5 minutes.

This isn't the first Espresso Book Machine to be installed but it is the first in the UK. There are 15 installed worldwide, mainly in the USA but also in Canada, Australia and Egypt, a number of them in public libraries, why are there none in public libraries in the UK you may wonder?.

I predict a bright future for the company that makes them - On Demand Books - as people rush to print out books which are now out of print or very difficult to find. I also predict a whole new cottage industry as people buy these machines and set themselves up as publishers - printing on demand any book you are to name. There will also be a future for self-pubishing via this method. if I heard right, the machines cost around $100,000.

The quality of the books printed is identical to that provided by professional printers and the books come complete with 4-colour cover.

Customers at Blackwell's will be able to get their book printed by the espresso book machine printed from April 27 or they can order books online at blackwell.co.uk. or if you have a book on CD or flashdrive you want printed then it can print them too.

The Espresso Book Machine is the creation of On Demand Books. Its revolutionary technology can "print, bind and trim paperback books at 112 pages a minute", and the quality is equivalent to factory printed books.

The Espresso Book Machine will shake up the book industry, and represent an interesting competitor to the Kindle Ebook Reader but just how and to what extent is not yet clear.

Candlestick Charts Technical Analysis

Online Stock Trades - Candlestick Charts in Technical Analysis

Stock Market Candlesticks

When studying candlestick charts or any type of technical analysis you first need to ascertain whether the chart you are looking at is in a trend - either an uptrend or a downtrend, a sideways trend doesn't count - in the DOW or S&P500 or whatever stock market chart you are looking at.

You also need to look for patterns - either bullish reversal patterns (such as a morning star), or bearish reversal patterns (such as a shooting star) or continuation patterns followed by confimration. There are no guarantees but using candlestick patterns can put the odds in your favour.

Finally bear in mind time frames - in technical analysis, candlestick patterns are only valid for around 1 to 6 candlesticks. So that if you re looking at 5 minute candlesticks then any reversal only holds for the next 1 - 6 candlesticks. Similarly if you are looking at daily candlesticks, only candlesticks for the next 1 - 6 days should be looked at.

Alarming Amazon Kindle Problem

Online Stock Trades - Problem with Amazon Kindle

I have previously mentioned the Amazon Kindle Ebook Reader and how well it was likely to do and in fact it turns out that the Kindle 2, which was launched in February to replace the Kindle 1, is said to be selling at approximately twice the rate of the Kindle 1, which itself sold out very quickly.

Approximately 300,000 Kindle 2 ebook readers have been sold to date, which translated to over $100 million in revenue this year, from the device which retails at $359.

There were around 400,000 Kindle 1s sold over the lifetime of the device. Amazon expects to sell approximately 800,000 Kindle 2s in 2009.

There are however estimates for sales as high as 1 million Kindle 2s this year, and these figures are supported by current numbers, if the economy picks up then sales will rise even faster. Amazon would have no trouble increasing production if necessary.

There is however one major problem with the Kindle, see - consumerist - you are totally dependent upon Amazon for its use. If you decide that you have infringed one of its conditions or if you return too much stuff, even if the stuff you return has nothing to do with the Kindle, then Amazon can switch your Kindle off and you are stuck with a useless piece of grey plastic that you paid $360 for !

Candlestick Charts Charting Basics

Online Stock Trades - Technical Analysis using Candlestick Charts and Candlestick Charting

Candlestick charts, sometime called stock market candlesticks or candlestick charting or Japanese candlesticks charts is a type of stock market or forex charting or technical analysis similar to bar charts used to chart price movements of an asset over time.

A candlestick chart combines a line chart and a bar chart. It is widely used in technical analysis of stocks, shares, forex, indices etc... in an attempt to predict future price movement.

Candlestick charts are commonly believed to have been devised in 18th century Japan by rice trader Homma Munehisa. Using candlestick charting as a means for prediciting commodities price movements i.e. rice gave Homma an understanding of open, low, high, and closing prices over a given period of time.

One reason candlestick charts are so popular is because the charts produced are easy to read and understand. Japanese rice traders found that the charts produced provides a reasonably reliable tool to predict future demand, but they are of course not fool-proof.

The candlestick charting method was adopted by Charles Dow and has been in common use by traders on stock markets ever since. They act as a simple visual aid for decision making. when the body is green (or white) it means buyers are bullish, when the body is black (or red) buyers are bearish.

There are however many other factors to be taken into consideration in technical analysis than just the color of the body. For example a long shadow (or wick or tail) below the body is a bullish signal (the lower shadow must be at least the same size as the body; the longer the lower shadow the more reliable the signal)
a long upper shadow is a bearish signal (the upper shadow must be at least the same size as the body; the longer the upper shadow, the more reliable the signal).

Fortunately in this Internet day and age you don't have to read through weighty tomes to understand candlestick charting or any other form of charting, because it's all on Youtube ! Check out the candlestick training videos from - YourTradingCoach.com

Susan Boyle Celebrity Superstar

Online Stock Trades - Susan Boyle - Celebrity Superstar Singing Sensation

Entertainment supremo Simon Cowell has a company called Syco which is part of Sony Music Entertainment. In 2006 Cowell claimed Syco accounted for 40% of Sony Music Entertainment profit.

Unless you live in a bucket then you must by now have heard of Susan Boyle who is the latest singing sensation to be discovered on Britain's Got Talent, which is presided over by Simon Cowell.

Susan Boyle has an amazing singing voice, but is 48 years old and 'never been kissed' and is rather "unprepossessing" as one commentator put it. Her extraordinary singing talent has made her hot favourite to win the talent show this year, although there is now some competition being manufactured in the form of 12 year old Welsh boy - Shaheen Jafargholi - which has got to be good for the ratings ! Now all we need is an Englishman and an Irishman !

Susan Boyle has already been on Larry King Live and a number of US talk shows and has been invited to appear on Oprah Winfrey's show.

She is also in the process of being signed up by Simon Cowell, who is a very astute businessman and so we can expect to see an increase in profits in both Syco and Sony Music Entertainment as a result. Multi-million dollar recording contracts are being mentioned.

There are also expected to be lots more contracts signed with Susan Boyle, so watch out for merchandising deals etc... When investing online do not underestimate the cult of celebrity !

Oscar Carboni Online Stock Trades

Online Stock Trades - Oscar Carboni the Real Deal?

Oscar Carboni - Real Deal or Scam?

I have been following Oscar Carboni for a few months now and I wrote a post about his video in which he mentions a possible fundamental shift in the markets back on 27 March - Oscar Carboni Online Trading , but I have noticed a number of people wondering if Oscar Carboni is running some sort of scam.

Personally, I really don' t understand how people can think he is trying to scam people. Most of the information he puts up on the Internet is available totally free of charge. He puts up videos on youtube.com/futuresanalysts - usually 2 or 3 videos a week - in which he clearly states his position ahead of the market opening bell and where he thinks the markets will be headed for the next day. He also has a website - Oscar Carboni Day Trading where he puts up the same videos and also a whole load of other information free of charge. He is also online most days so you can watch him live and chat with him - all free of charge.

He does have a subscription area too, and if you sign up you get more details and alerts earlier, but there is never any pressure to sign up, so I don't really see how you can fault the guy.

In addition to this, he actually talks sense ! He doesn't always get everything right but if you follow him you will see he gets it right far more often than he gets it wrong and also, as he says, you put your stop losses in before you make the trade, so your downside is limited.

I have learned a lot watching Oscar, I haven't signed up for his subscription service, but just his free service provides excellent information.

As I mentioned above he saw a possible fundamental shift in the markets back in March 27. He had been bearish on the markets since around October 2007 - calling the top and also being consistently bearish ever since (until March 27). You can check out all the back videos on youtube - they are all still there.

He is now bullish, which means basically he sees that the charts have risen through some significant resistance areas and he is now buying the dips instead of selling the rallies. He is a very short-term daytrader and always closes his positions before the markets close.

He has not said that we have seen THE bottom for the markets, but he is saying that at the moment the markets are bullish so there is no pointing fighting it.

Here is his latest video

Homes for Sale

Got some cash ? Looking for an alternative investment ? Why not buy a house ? The US real estate market is still so bad that you can now buy a house for $1,000. A lot of them are in the north-east - 18 in Flint, Michigan, for less than $3,000, 46 in Cleveland, 22 in Indianapolis, and 709 in Detroit.

Most of these houses are of course being sold at a great loss by the banks that repossessed them, which makes you wonder why they didn't sell them to the people they evicted.

The fact of the matter is it is often cheaper for the banks to give the houses away rather than waste time trying to realize their true market value.

In Detroit a 3-bed, one-bathroom bungalow is on sale for just $500, but it needs total refurbishment inside, costing between $15,000 and $20,000. But last time it sold for $72,000 just 18 months ago in 2007.

Lenders are basically looking to get rid of properties rather than maintain them and pay property taxes.

The price of the house usually goes straight to the real estate brokers and sometimes the lender has to add a bit more to make it worth the realtor's while.

The houses need to be fixed up with new wiring, plumbing and heating, walls and ceilings sheet-rocked.

But even so they are still bargains.

Cleveland also has many incredibly cheap homes such as a 4-bedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom house for $1,900.

It has a deep front porch with Doric columns, but as a sign of how nad things are, the last time it sold was just one year ago in March 2008 for $16,677.

Buyers can however get government help to finance repairs from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

There may also be the possibility of grant money from the $4 billion Neighborhood Stabilization Program designed to help buyers with grants for down payments.

Online Stock Trades Market Report

Online Stock Trades - Stock Market News

Stock Market Report

The FTSE 100 rose in early trading but then fell back below the psychological barrier that is 4,000 as the DOW and the S&P500 started weak on inflation numbers and weak industrial data in the US.

The stock market finished down 0.5% or 20 points, at 3,968 in London.

CPI inflation declined 0.1% in March and 0.4% year on year, the first year this ha happened since 1955. Industrial production fell by 1.5% in March which was worse than anticipated.

When London closed the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 16 points, at 7,396, the S&P 500 was more or less flat.

The main fallers in the UK were mining stocks after Rio Tinto announced a cut in production.

Vedanta Resources fell most - down 76p to 932p, Antofagasta fell 37p to 553p and Xstrata fell 40p to 573p.

Financials also had a poor day, Legal & General being the hardest hit - falling back 5p to 50p, with Schroders falling 60p to 812p.

Defensives on the other hand saw an improvement, tobacco stock BAT rose 70p to £15.66 and Imperial Tobacco increasing 53p to £14.82.

Reed Elsevier was the day's best performer - up 28p to 487p, after Goldman Sachs added it to their conviction buy list.

The Beige Book has just come out in the US and there is some evidence that the fall in the economy is slowing down, as a result the DOW is now up 58 at 7978 with S&P500 up 4 to 845.

The stock market would appear to be determined to go up at the moment so this bear market rally seems to have legs and we may have seen the bottom back in March.

Online Stock Trades - European Stock Markets Rally

Stock Market News

Financial stocks continue to rally with the FTSE finishing up at 3988 although off the day's highs, after Goldman Sachs reported higher-than-expected Q1 earnings.

The Goldman Sachs report gave online trading a short-term boost to the markets but shortly thereafter the US markets turned down with the DOW currently down 127 at 7933 despite Barack Obama saying the economy was showing signs of recovery.

Ben Bernanke is also due to speak, so we shall see what effect his speech has on the stock market. The DOW is at 7916 (down 140 points as he starts)

The markts have of course rallied quite significantly since bottoming in March at around 6600 on the DOW.

Goldman Sachs beat market forecasts with Q1 net profit of $1.81bn but they also intend raising an extra $5bn through the sale of common stock to repay some of its TARP borrowings.

Some analysts remain cautious. Andrew Stimpson at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods pointed out that European banks have rallied over 50% from their March lows, saying ”While their low valuations justified a recovery, we do not see banks’ fundamentals supporting sustained sector outperformance and remain neutral on the sector.”

Insurance companies also rallied. Legal & General rising almost 15% to 56p.

Divyang Shah from IFR Markets was also cautious ”It is important to put this rally into perspective. What is being bought most aggressively are those sectors that had been beaten up the most. Market psychology was overly bearish and the fact that global firms are still cutting capacity suggests that the outlook is still a moving target.”

Nevertheless stock markets do seem inclinded to rally and for the time being it seems that the wiser move is to buy the dips rather than sell the rallies.

Alleged Canadian Ponzi Fraud

Stock Market Investing - Weizhen Tang's Alleged Ponzi Fraud

Stock Market News

Another Ponzi scheme has allegedly been uncovered by the SEC, which has charged Mr Weizhen Tang, a Toronto-based fund manager and his hedge fund with operating an investment fraud.

The SEC has charged Weizhen Tang with operating a Ponzi scheme - for a definition of a Ponzi scheme see What is a Ponzi scheme.

Starting in 2004, Mr Tang raised $75 million from over 200 investors for the Overseas Chinese Fund Limited Partnership hedge fund.

According to the SEC, Mr Tang told investors that he posted false profits and used funds from new investors to pay out at least $8 million in "fake" profits to old investors in order to hide substantial trading losses.

In a letter to partners on Weizhen Tang's website - wtang.com -, he said: "I did not steal everyone's funds."

"For my investment partners, February 27 of 2009 was a most shocking, heart-breaking and grieving day. It was also a day of tremendous pain to myself, one that I had feared so much but eventually it arrived. Because of the sin that I had committed, I have hurt you badly. I'd like to extend my deepest apologies."

On 31 March Mr Tang posted the fifth open letter in which he said "For both Ponzi and Madoff, their purpose is to take possession of the funds of the clients by deception. However, I am by no means like them, so I am not afraid of the judicial process. Though some of my actions were not appropriate in the process of financing, they were conducted only for the purpose of investment and for verifying my investment philosophy so that I can lead my clients on to the path of prosperity. The ongoing investigation will prove this fact."

In his hedge fund Mr Tang targeted members of the Chinese American community.

From November 2007 and possibly earlier, acording to the SEC, Tang raised capital for his hedge fund by selling limited partnership interests in Texas based venture WinWin Capital Limited Partnership.

The SEC alleges that Weizhen Tang e-mailed investors asking them to entrust even more of their money to him so that he could continue trading on their behalf and also informed investors that in the last 2 weeks he has been actively raising an additional $1 million to "recoup" investor losses and has been creating new business entities, bank accounts and brokerage accounts to get round action by the SEC and Canadian regulator the Ontario Securities Commission.

According to Edwin Tomko, an attorney representing WinWin-related entities WinWin is cooperating with the SEC.

Online Trading Bear Bottoms?

Online Stock Trading - Did the Stock Markets Bottom in March?

Stock Market News

According to Market Oracle the long-tem trend of the S&P500 is still down and they expect the bear market to continue until 2012 - 2014 ! This will represent the low of a very long 120 year cycle and clearly if this is true then there will see much lower prices, in fact they say 350 - 400 on the S&P500. But between now and then there will be rallies !

However they also say that an important low was put in in the stock markets on March 6 after which there was a 20% rally. Their index chart analysis is really quite complex so you ought to check it all out for yourself - http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article9879.html

Elliott Wave analysis is divided on whether 667 was the end of intermediate wave (3) or (5). This, according to my mate Oscar Carboni, is the principal reason he doesn't use Elliott Waves, you never know where to start your waves from.

The fact however that the markets continued the recent upward trend despite the bad jobs news on Friday shows that this rally has some strength.

Manoj Ladwah on CNBC has just been saying that we could see a 6% pull-back in the FTSE which would bring it back to around 3800 after which he expects the rally to pick up steam again.

So, all in all, most people seem to be saying that 667 on the S&P500 was a short-term bottom at least and that we should be seeing a good rally from here. Today of course the stock markets are down a bit, but that seems only logical given the strong rally we have seen over the last 4 weeks. The best March since 1933 apparently.

Bernie Madoff's Assets Seized

Stock Market Investing - Bernie Madoff's Assets Seized

Stock Market News

Bernie Madoff Yacht Bull Online Trading Bernie Madoff 's assets have been seized by US marshals in the US. Among the Madoff assets seized are an $11 million Palm Beach mansion a $2 million yacht.

Nearly 7,000 clients have already filed claims against Madoff and his wife Ruth, estimated at $826 million. Thousands more are expected.

Five marshals arrived at the five-bedroom mansion late on Wednesday afternoon to take control of the site and make an inventory.

The property was purchased for $3.8 million in the name of Ruth Madoff 15 years ago, a few hours earlier, marshals took the 55ft yacht called "Bull" and a 24ft motor boat from marinas in Florida.

"This boat was extremely well kept, extremely clean. Engine compartment was spotless. It looked like somebody scrubbed it every day."

Madoff is in jail in New York, awaiting sentencing.

Prosecutors want to seize all Madoff's assets and those of his wife -including a $7 million Manhattan penthouse, a $1 million home in Cap d' Antibes, France and a $3 million property on Long Island. They are also looking to seize $10 million in furnishings for all the homes and cars.

Defence attorneys may try to rescue the Manhattan apartment and $62 million in securities, for Mrs Madoff, much to the anger of ex-investors, many of whom have lost their life savings.

They didn't seize the kitchen sink but if there was an ice cream maker then that was probably put on the list !
