Looking for stock picks in the Canadian oil sector ? Well here are some interesting suggestions from Aston Hill Financial's Manager Joanne Hruska who manges the Ark Aston Hill Energy Class which is described as a "Canadian energy fund with a higher proportion of small and mid-cap companies than its peers"

The fund aims to achieve GARP (Growth at a reasonable price) with a bias toward value.

NUVISTA ENERGY LTD. (NVA/TSX) - Ms. Hruska has increased her long-term position in this gas-weighted stock. In the next few weeks, the company is expected to release information on two wells it has drilled.

PROSPEX RESOURCES LTD. (PSX/TSX) which works in the Kakwa area of Alberta where it found almost 24 million cubic feet of natural gas in two horizontal wells.

ARSENAL ENERGY INC. (AEI/TSX) - a long-term holding, Ms. Hruska bought more of this stock above and below current prices.

Google Earnings Strong in 2009

Online Stock Trading - Google Earnings Beat Expectations

Google's earnings and profits rose in the fourth quarter 2009, and beat Wall Street's expectations. Google had earnings of US$6.67 billion, a 17% increase on Q4 2008. When you remove the commissions Google pays its ad-network partners (I guess that means people like me!), revenue beat the expected $4.92 billion and came in at $4.95 billion.

Paid clicks on ads., which generate a fee for Google even if people don't buy anything, rose 13% compared with Q4 2008. Average click value increased 5% (which is also interesting to know when I try to renegotiate my contract with Google!).

Google is now clearly looking at the recession through the rear-view mirror, as net income in Q4 shot up over 5 times compared to a year ago and sales grew 17%, the fastest rate in a year.

Eric Schmidt, Google’s CEO said “We are back in business full-blast,” Q4 was an “extraordinary end to a roller coaster year. We are optimistic about the future.”

Google is also belatedly taking a stand for free speech in China ! Well so it says. Why did it wait so long ? Well it seems some naughty Chinese were hacking into Google's source code (and some dissidents e-mail accounts) and of course if the Chinese get the source code then why would they need Google ?

Google's revenue in China is around $600 million which is barely 2% of global revenue, but all the same Google is keen to maintain its relations with the Chinese

Google's share price fell around 4% overnight on the news, as some investors were expecting even better results and the DOW fell 200 points on Obama's attack on the banks.

Revenue for Q4 2009 was $6.67 billion, up from $5.7 billion in 2008. Net revenue was $4.95 billion, up from $4.22 billion.

Income exc. charges was $2.19 billion, $6.79 a share, a 33% rise from last year.

Google’s revenue is very much obtained from search ads, which tend to perform better than display ads and as Google controls around 66% of the search ad market they are in a stronger position than Yahoo and Bing.

Yahoo is expected to report a slight decline in revenue next week.
